Biofuels

How are airlines being sustainable? Switching to biofuels.

Alaska Airlines

In 2011, Alaska Airlines flew several dozen flights using 20% biofuel. Later, they became the first carrier to fly a commercial flight with biofuel made of corn and forest residue feedstocks. In 2020, Alaska Airlines made a goal of using SAFs from at least one airport.

KLM

KLM, one of Europe’s most popular airlines, is a leader in the airline industry when it comes to biofuels. Starting in the year 2022, the Dutch airline agreed to purchase 75,000 tons of biofuel from a new plant constructed near Amsterdam. KLM also runs a corporate biofuel program that assures company travel uses biofuel.

SAS

SAS, a Scandinavian airline, allows customers to pay extra for biofuel which aims to give travelers the option to reduce their climate impact. Because transitioning to biofuels can be very costly, this still allows the option of sustainability.

United

“Flight for the Planet” was a 2019 campaign headed by United that provided air travel from Chicago to Los Angeles using 70% regular jet fuel and 30% biofuel. Later in 2019, the carrier began investing $40 million in biofuel production, also agreeing to purchase up to 10 million gallons of biofuels over the next two years.
