Change your clothes washing habits! First, only wash your clothes after you have worn them a couple of times to cut down on the amount of water and energy you use. When it does become time to wash your items, make sure that you wash them at a temperature around 30 degrees. Research done by the Energy Saving Trust has found that washing clothes at 30 degrees as opposed to 40 degrees can reduce energy usage by around 40%! Afterwards, let your clothes dry naturally instead of in a drying machine to further conserve energy.
Buy less clothes! Make sure that you ask yourself if you really need another article of clothing before you make any purchases. Only buy it if you truly love it and know that you will, in fact, wear it. A couple other tips are to buy wardrobe staples that you can wear many different ways and organize your closet so that you can see each and every piece of clothing you own.
Only shop sustainable fabrics! Avoid fabrics such as normal cotton, synthetic fibers, and animal-derived materials. Instead, shop clothing made from organic and GOTS certified cotton, recycled polyester, cellulose-based fabrics, and bast fabrics. Check the quality before you buy! Don't buy clothing that you know won't last. If the quality of a piece of clothing isn't the greatest and you think it's going to fall apart after a few wears, simply don't buy it.
Alter pieces of clothing you already own! Don't wear something? Upcycle or donate it. Bring out your creative side and do some DIYing. Or simply donate it so someone else can enjoy it.
